Summary

This survey is primarily aimed to capture the views of Fong Lim residents, though others are welcome to contribute.  It seeks to gather views on support for VAD legislation for the NT, generally, and with respect to two specific parameters.  Results and data collated will be used by the Member for Fong Lim, to help inform subsequent decision-making. The survey will close on 21 August 2026.

Background

In January 2026, the Attorney General made public the Government’s intention to table VAD legislation in mid 2026, in the wake of the delivery of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee VAD Report of 30 September 2025. Whilst legislation is still pending public release, this survey seeks to gauge attitudes towards VAD in respect of matters anticipated to feature in the forthcoming bill.

If you participate in this survey, please note your answers will remain anonymous, and no information will be used in a way which can personally identify you, or your personal details.  All results and data collected will be anonymised before being provided to anyone outside of the Office of the Member for Fong Lim.

RESPONDENT INFORMATION

Which category best describes you?

QUESTION 1

In Principle Support

Do you support the introduction of Voluntary Assisted Dying laws in the NT, in principle?

QUESTION 2

Prognosis

In the context of VAD in Australia, prognosis refers to the estimated life expectancy a doctor gives for an advanced, progressive, and incurable illness. It is a strict legal requirement used to determine if a patient qualifies for VAD access in most jurisdictions.

What prognosis timeframe do you believe should be prescribed in the NT legislation?

QUESTION 3

In Principle Support

In the context of VAD in Australia, a ‘gag clause’ refers to legal provisions that prohibit health practitioners from proactively raising the topic of VAD with their patients. These clauses essentially stop healthcare workers from discussing VAD unless a patient raises the matter first. Gag clauses are currently part of the SA legislation, have been recently removed from VIC legislation, and do not exist in any other state or territory legislation.

Should NT VAD legislation contain a gag clause?
